Some days, I have a pretty nice job.
I went fishing this morning with Ryan, fishing guide extrordinaire. I caught 7 fish- one was a keeper. 2 brown trout, 3 suckers, a chub (he was so little with the current I didn't know I had him on the line!) and my one keeper, a 13-inch rainbow trout. While at Whitewater I saw some of the changes that have occurred because of last year's flood. One section of river moved 20 feet! Just think-- at one point we'd been planning our young adult retreat at Whitewater park for the night of the flood.
Some people might say God was watching over us so we didn't camp there that night. A clergy friend would point out that he thinks that's bad theology. One might ask then, if God prevented us from being there on the night of the flood, why didn't God prevent the other people? This, of course, leads to bigger questions about God's role when bad things happen.
My 2 sentence explanation of how I put it together: When bad things happen God is right in there with us, experiencing the heartbreak, the pain, the confusion. God then nudges us to incorporate the bad into our lives and urges us to see ourselves as whole, honoring the fullness of our experiences. (Others put it together very differently.)
What do you think? Did God "save" us that night from being at Whitewater?
